Diane’s 1997 Interview With Anita Hill

Anita Hill speaking earlier this year. In 1997, she talked with Diane about the experience of testifying against then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas.
In 1997, Anita Hill published a memoir “Speaking Truth To Power.” It was six years after her testimony alleging then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas had sexually harassed her. Hill said she wrote the book to give people a full understanding of the person she is. As she told the New York Times at the time, “Most of the newspapers that have covered the story really haven’t covered much of my background and my family. And to understand not only how I had come to the hearings but how I had come to work for Clarence Thomas, you had to understand a whole lot of other things, and that’s what I wanted to put down.”
Diane interviewed Anita Hill about the memoir, and throughout the conversation they discuss her treatment by the Senate Judiciary Committee, why she felt she had to speak out, and if she has any regrets.
Tomorrow, Christine Blasey Ford will go before the Senate Judiciary Committee to offer her own testimony. She has accused current Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when they were in high school.
On the eve of Ford’s testimony, the story of Anita Hill is as relevant as ever.
