Tibet is trendy, according to China scholar Orville Schell. It’s an inspiration for actor Richard Gere, the beneficiary of fundraising concerts by the Beastie Boys, and the setting of a Brad Pitt movie. Schell’s new book compares the West’s fantasy version of Tibet with the political and social reality. Dr. Schell is dean of the graduate school of journalism at the University of California-Berkeley.
