Frances Kazan, wife of film director Elia Kazan and a scholar of Turkish history, discusses her new novel. It’s the story of a girl growing up in 19th-century Constantinople – a time and place in which women were not educated. It’s based on the true story of Halide Edib, whose family defied convention and sent her to an American school.
