Jane Addams, first female recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, is remembered as founder of Hull House, a Chicago institution that served needy immigrants at the turn of the 20th century. In her new book, University of Chicago professor Jean Bethke Elshtain reexamines Addams’ legacy as a public intellectual and social reformer.
