Civil engineer Henry Petroski has chronicled the evolution of pencils, paperclips, and other "useful things" in previous books. In his new memoir, Paperboy, he writes about the childhood influences, such as his bike and his paper route, that led to his lifelong fascination with the workings of everyday objects.
