National Security Adviser John Bolton has long been known for his tough stance on Iran and has pushed the Trump administration to increase both economic and military pressure on the Gulf nation.

Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated over the last few weeks. As the U.S. has tightened sanctions and intensified military pressure, Iran has responded by going on offense, with tough talk and suspected attacks on a number of oil tankers in the Persian Gulf.

Meanwhile, questions remain about how and why this current strain began, and how far it will go.
